In the year 1853,the railways were introduced in India. In 1903 IRCA - Indian Railway Conference Association was set up and in 1930 Central standard office - CSO was created for the preparation of designs, specifications and standards of Indian Railways. Till 1947, most of the designing and manufacturing of railway equipment was entrusted to foreign consultants. After the independence, a drastic increase of rail demand was observed due to theincreased industrial and economic activities in the country. So, a new organization called Railway Testing and Research Centre - RTRC was established in 1952 at Lucknow. Similarly RDSO - Research Designs and Standards Organization was created to certify agencies to work for Railways. Only certified agencies are considered as government approved.
